Archetypes

Temple, Pagoda and Tower are part of the Archetypes series from the ongoing project The Daughter of the Great Library which I started at the end of 2017 and which title is a historical reference to the short remnant of the Great Library of Alexandria that was left after its sack and destruction. From a personal experience, I visit the few remaining volumes of a library which was dear to me, and that is also lost: that of my father, which disappeared shortly after his death.

An archetype is a primordial model from which other models and structures –physical or mental– are derived. Temple, Pagoda and Tower evoque architectural archetypes imbued with material and symbolic values which alude to long-lasting, solid and eternal structures. Starting with the use of photography, medium with which I relate technically, conceptually and materially in different ways, I capture images of the remnant volumes of my father’s library. I photograph their covers, their spines, the details of their pages and, as building blocks, I use them to put up towers and piles which are also documented. The resulting prints of these images become raw material –the paper I manipulate, cut and fold– with which I build scale models in which the titles History of the world, Masters of the drama, Complete tragedies, Long days journey into night, Man in the search of meaning and Man and his symbols can be read, and which reinforce the narrative related with the structures they help to conform and with the mystery of that disappearance. Alluding to the primordial models mentioned before, Temple, Pagoda and Tower are that which thrives and is built after the collapse and from the remnant. Placed over a theatrical stage, they refer to the mysterious and archetypal experience of the enigma, of the mise-en-scène and of the threshold of imagination.

Arquetipos
